Meet Judelio Da Silva Barros Barreto, 23 Years Old: Finding Purpose Through Timorese Youth for Change (TY4C).

In February 2024, the Timorese Youth for Change (TY4C) welcomed its newest cohort, including Judelio Da Silva Barros Barreto, a passionate 23-year-old with a profound interest in audiovisual arts. His journey with TY4C at Casa de Produção Audiovisual (CPA) began with a meeting where he was introduced to the team in CPA office in Taibesi, Lahane, Dili.

Judelio’s decision to join TY4C was driven by his desire to expand his skills in the audiovisual field. “I believe CPA is the right place for me to develop my knowledge and abilities,” he stated, emphasizing the institution’s credibility and longstanding professional impact for the society through their work, produce storytelling (documenter film) focus on the vulnerable people in rural area, CPA also help the young generation like me to take action and motivated them to explore their knowledge and given them opportunity to learn in CPA along with the professional staff.”

His initial exposure to CPA’s programs through social media and the Youth Film Festival in 2023 sparked his curiosity and solidified his decision to apply. The TY4C program has been transformative for Judelio, providing him with valuable experiences in video production, editing, and camerawork. “I’ve had the opportunity to explore different roles within our team,” he reflects. Currently serving as a video producer for their third production, Judelio values the hands-on learning and collaborative spirit fostered at CPA.

For Judelio, TY4C is more than just a career path—it’s a calling. “I feel that this journey is God’s plan for me to serve Him through my work,” he shares earnestly. His belief in the program’s ability to create positive societal change through media resonates deeply. “We aim to give a voice to the voiceless and empower youth across the country,” he explains, highlighting TY4C’s focus on youth development and decision-making.

“As a young individual, this program has been instrumental in fostering significant personal growth in my life. Initially inexperienced in the audiovisual field, I found myself at CPA, where I have freely gained invaluable experience through education, training, workshops, and a supportive work environment. The skills I’ve acquired here are transformative, impacting various aspects of my life. What excites me most is applying these skills to create meaningful contributions through my work, particularly in journalism and beyond. I am grateful to CPA for providing me with this opportunity to contribute positively to society, especially towards empowering fellow youth.” – shares Judelio.

Before Judelio joined TY4C program, his life followed a typical routine of going to school and returning home like everyone else. However, since becoming a member of Timorese Youth for Changes (TY4C), his perspective has shifted and widened. He believes that his purpose in this world extends beyond academics; he stated “I am meant to do something extraordinary. It feels as though God has entrusted me with a new journey, providing me with fresh opportunities to serve Him and make a meaningful impact in my community.”

The working environment at CPA is incredibly supportive, with staff members who not only guide Judelio and his friends through their actions but also motivate and share their experiences with TY4C crew. The CPA director, Rui Muakandala, stands out as a dedicated leader who consistently supports youth endeavors. Judelio is grateful for the professional atmosphere and the strong relationships fostered among them at CPA; as he explained, “Working alongside my peers from TY4C Batch-6 has been particularly rewarding; despite knowing each other for only three to four months, we continuously assist and encourage one another. This collaborative environment has significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth, equipping me with knowledge, discipline, and effective work practices that benefit others.”
