A Heartfelt Journey: Reflections on My Volunteering Experience

From July 10 to August 6, 2024, I had the privilege of volunteering at the Finance Office of the Instituto São João de Brito (ISJB). As a Certified Public Accountant with 30 years of experience, this was a unique opportunity for me to offer my skills not for professional gain, but for a profoundly meaningful cause. It was a deeply fulfilling experience, and I am grateful to God for granting me this chance.

My journey to Timor-Leste was inspired by a Retreat in Daily Life (RDL) with Fr. Cel Reyes, SJ. During this retreat, I found myself in the presence of the Heavenly Court, including God the Father and Jesus Christ, who confirmed my sense of calling to respond positively to the invitation from my friends and companions in the Jesuit Volunteer Philippines (JVP), Cesar and Jo Villanueva. This profound encounter was a moment of deep consolation for me.

Looking back, I realize that my decision to join JVP 40 years ago was rooted in the core of my heart. At that time, I thought that my two-year commitment would be the extent of my involvement, and I would move on to pursue a conventional career. Yet, at this juncture in my life, God has led me back to that core, providing me with a new opportunity to contribute. I hope for more chances to support the Jesuit missions in Timor-Leste and beyond.

I am thankful to Jo, my inspiration and friend; and Cesar, my teacher and guide. I am also grateful for the chance to meet Fr. EJ, Fr. Isaias, Fr. Luis, Fr. Calis, Mr. João, Prof. Fivo, Prof. Eric, Prof. Flavio, Ms. Ari, and Ms. Selly. A special thanks goes to the ISJB students and faculty who participated in the research seminars, as well as my early morning mass companions, Sister Selma (Superior of the Religious of Jesus and Mary), Novices Rubylin, Maria, and Martha, and Sister Lavina.

The Soibada Pilgrimage from July 30-31 was a highlight of this experience. I am grateful for the extraordinary Holy Mass celebrations, enhanced by soulful choir performances. Meeting the Jesuit priests, scholastics, brothers, and the dedicated lay who support the Jesuit mission in Timor-Leste was truly inspiring.

Above all, I am thankful for my Finance Office colleagues Bro. Deo Mesquitas, Gavin Purcell, Betty da Costa and Lidia Li. Your serious work, coupled with moments of fun and laughter, made this experience unforgettable.

This brief but impactful engagement at ISJB has imbued me with a sense of deep meaning and purpose. I feel truly blessed to be part of the Jesuit mission in Timor-Leste, a country whose history of sacrifice and pursuit of freedom I deeply admire.
