A Joyful Milestone: First Vows of Three Novices in East Timor Region

April 29, 2025 marked a significant milestone for the Society of Jesus in East Timor Region, as three dedicated novices professed their First Vows at the Novitiate Manresa in Lahane, Dili. This joyful occasion was the fruit of years of spiritual formation, prayer and commitment under the guidance of Fr. Philip Heng, SJ, a devoted Jesuit missionary, with the support of Fr. Marito Monteiro, SJ, Socio of the Novitiate.

The three novices—Sch. Leolino Alves Madeira, SJ, Sch. Edito Seixas, SJ and Sch. Inácio Edu F. Soares, SJ—each bring with them a unique journey of vocation. Leolino was first inspired through his participation in the MAG+S formation, where he became a dedicated Mag+ser. Edito and Inácio are proud alumni of Nossa Senhora de Fátima (NOSSEF) Secondary School in Railaco, a Jesuit educational project known for nurturing faith and academic excellence.

The First Vows Mass was presided over by Fr. Erik John J. Gerilla, SJ (Fr. EJ), Regional Superior of the Jesuits in the region, with Fr. Philip Heng, SJ and Fr. Marito Monteiro, SJ as concelebrants. The sacred celebration drew many Jesuits, family members, friends and relatives who gathered to witness this profound moment and offer their heartfelt support.

Following the Mass, the community joined together for a celebratory lunch, where each of the newly professed scholastics gave short speeches, introducing their families to the Jesuit community. In return, Fr. Marito warmly introduced the Jesuits who took part in the ceremony. It was a touching opportunity for fellowship and thanksgiving, as all present shared in the joy of the occasion.

As a sign of gratitude, Fr. Heng, SJ offered rosaries to the parents of the new scholastics—symbols of prayer and appreciation for their support in nurturing their sons’ vocations. In return, the families presented traditional Tais to Fr. EJ, Fr. Heng, and Fr. Marito, and Fr. Nelinho Alves, SJ (Director of Jesuits Candidates) and also to another two ladies who prepared foods for them during the formation—a cultural expression of thanksgiving and deep respect.

This beautiful celebration was not only a testament to the grace of God at work in these young men’s lives but also a reminder of the strength and unity of the Jesuit family in Timor-Leste.

Let us continue to pray for Leolino, Edito and Inácio, that they may always respond with a generous “yes” to God’s call, and that the Holy Spirit may guide them in their journey as Jesuits, ever faithful to the mission of Christ.
