A Legacy of Care and Growth: Amandio Lemos and the Jesuit Farmlands of Dare.

A hidden gem of natural beauty may be found not far from the bustling city of Dili: the Jesuit farmlands in Dare. A spot where Amandio Lemos, a dedicated custodian, nurtures the land’s potential for growth. For almost three decades, Amandio, along with Fr. Francisco Tansui, SJ, an Indonesian missionary who spent 14 years in Timor between 1986 and 2001 (Fr. Tansui died in 2007), has tended to the rich soil of this region, growing not only crops but also a deep relationship to the ground. Before Indonesia’s occupation in 1975, the land was cared for by Fr. João Filgueiras, SJ, and Br. Daniel Ornelas, SJ.

Dare is located on high ground, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city of Dili. The cool, refreshing climate of this area plays a significant role in the abundance of plants and fruits that thrive here. Durian fruit, salak (snake fruit), oranges, dragon fruit, cacao, and many other kinds of plants flourish under Amandio and his team’s careful treatment.

Amandio, 63, has dedicated 38 years of his life to these Jesuit farmlands in Dare. As an experienced farmer, he enjoys his work and embraces the challenges and benefits that it entails. “As a farmer, perseverance alone will not help,” Amandio stated. “But with patience, humility, and hard work, we can bear fruit and benefit our lives and our community.” His statements reflect the deep faith and humility that led him in his work, reminding us that success is defined not just by the harvest but also by the values we create along our journey.

Amandio’s commitment to the land has not only provided him with a fulfilling career but also supported his family. He is the proud father of seven children, four daughters and three sons, and lives with his wife in the nearby village of Kuala Ulu. Through his work in Dare, Amandio has been able to meet the daily needs of his family, provide financial stability, and offer a nurturing environment for his children to grow.

The Jesuit farmlands in Dare are more than just a place for agriculture; they are a tribute to the power of faith, patience, and perseverance. Amandio Lemos’ dedication to this land has had a long-lasting impact on the community and family, proving that the benefits of dedication, both concrete and metaphorical, may shape lives for future generations.

As we reflect on Amandio’s legacy, we are reminded of the value of perseverance, humility, and faith in all that we do. Just as the land in Dare thrives under his care, so can our own lives if we cultivate these principles with patience and persistence.
