As I entered into the new academic year, I began the Juniorate formation – a stage of formation given to the scholastics where the main purpose is exposed to the life of literature, language, arts and cultures. In the Philippines, many of our brothers shared that this was their most favorite stage formation because of its many activities/exposures and time of enjoyment. However, it is quite different from my experience. I have been feeling stretched and pushed to the limits these recent months. It is not only the classes that pushed me to my limits but also many responsibilities, apostolates and community life. Like the gospel on the 20th of September, I felt God, the Sower, continue to prepare my soil in order for His seed, the Word, to grow in my heart.
On September 7-13, we stayed in Naga, a small city which is predominantly Catholic. We were given the chance to witness the “Procession of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.” We visited schools, churches, and participated in the procession. Amidst the many activities, there were many growths I felt in the personal level. There were more openness, freedom and joy in journeying as a Jesuit among Jesus’ companions. I also felt deep gratitude towards the protection of our Lady of Peñafrancia, and the great faith shown by the people. Again, through this tilling and caring, my heart is continuously being prepared as a good soil for the Sower.

Before the end of the month, exactly on 29th of September, I was surprised by the visit of the student representatives of Colégio de Santo Inácio de Loiola-Kasait from Timor-Leste to Manila. They were accompanied by Sch. Ismael Lopes, SJ, a teacher and a parent, with the purpose of attending a conference of Ignatian Students Leadership Forum (ISFL) in Iloilo City. It was a very consoling experience for me as I guide and toured them around the city of Manila. I did spend my whole time with them, although very tiring but seeing them enjoying the places was more than enough for me. These experiences did not originate from nothingness rather these are fruits that was planted long ago by my teachers, formators and friends in Colégio de Santo Inácio de Loiola. I am proud of my “alma mater” and the students who are truly mature. Two days of being with them was a blessing and I truly prayed for all of them. Again, my heart has grown slowly to becoming a more fertile soil, yet hoping to bear a good harvest for the Sower and may the Seed continue to grow in me.
My experiences this month were not merely a process of growth as a Jesuit, but also a growth of a heart that continuously tilled and prepared by the Sower, the Lord. Likewise, responsibilities, challenges, community life, studies and prayer-life are the part of the preparations for a good soil, a Jesuit life.
