Discovering God’s Presence Through the Experience of Others

During this Ignatian Month, the participants of MAG+S Timor-Leste Batch 10 dedicated their time to experience the lives of others through acts of service for those in greatest need. This activity is an integral part of the Ignatian Spirituality formation for new members of MAG+S Timor-Leste.

This year, we selected various locations for our Community Service activities. Together with their team leaders, participants designed their own initiatives to serve others. They visited places such as dormitory for children and youth in IS-MAIK in Kuluhun, Dili, the orphanage of the Alma Sisters, the Association of People with Visual Impairments, and blue-collar workers living near the Beduku River in Dili.

This new batch is nearly 50 participants, each bringing their own unique character and personal experiences of God’s love. Since the formation began in February, they have been filled with joy and enthusiasm.

Due to limited funding, participants followed the example of previous batches by organizing group fundraising efforts, such as selling food around Dili and asking for donations from kiosks, shops, and other local businesses for the necessary funds for their activities.

On the actual day, each group carried out their chosen activities, which included painting, singing, praying, and distributing food. At the end of the day, in their reflection, they recalled many graces received, expressed deep gratitude for the experiences, and felt inspired to live out the spirit of magis—seeking to do more for God and for those in need.

Aristoteles, one of the participants, shared his personal experience:

“I truly felt the value of Ignatian Spirituality—being a man and woman for and with others. Serving others brought me so much joy. I realized that not only do we live for ourselves, but also be a blessing for others.”

Sonia, who visited the center for people with visual impairments, reflected:

“I realized what it means to see God in others. I loved that before carrying out the activity, we went around Dili asking for donations and selling food. In the end, as young people and as human beings, we must learn to respect one another and not judge people by their appearance—especially those with special needs like the blind. It broke my heart to witness their suffering, but it also opened my eyes.”
