Finding Meaning In My Mission—Embracing Growth And Testing

The period of Jesuit formation known as ‘Regency’, which takes place between a Jesuit’s philosophy and theology studies, offers a unique opportunity to give, learn, grow, and seek a deeper understanding in life. As I reflect on my journey, I see life as a continuous path, often moving faster than we realize. It has taught me valuable lessons, blending challenges with success and joy. This perspective encapsulates my time of philosophy studies in India. Upon completion, I found myself ready to embrace new opportunities for growth and spiritual exploration.

In June 2024, I returned to Timor-Leste and approached Fr. Marito Monteiro, SJ about the possibility of a retreat before starting my regency and he agreed. Fr. Joaquim Sarmento, SJ guided me through this reflective period. During the retreat, I prayed earnestly to discover my true calling and sought the Blessed Virgin Mary’s intercession for strength and grace. I dedicated myself to the mission ahead, placing three intentions and two objectives before the cross of Jesus. My intentions included understanding my calling as a Jesuit scholastic, embracing growth and testing, and finding meaning in my mission. My objectives focused on contributing to Timor-Leste and the church while helping young people become critical thinkers and advocates for justice, peace, and reconciliation.

With these prayers and goals in mind, I embarked on my regency. On July 1, 2024, I received an official letter appointing me to Instituto São João de Brito (ISJB)-Kasait. I began my mission on July 4, 2024, and later signed a contract as a professor with additional responsibilities in the ISJB’s Finance team. My enthusiasm for justice, peace, and reconciliation fuelled my commitment to give my best effort.

My first task involved assisting the Finance team, particularly Mr. Gavin, a volunteer from Palms Australia, in creating a Finance Manual for ISJB. Though I initially felt apprehensive, teamwork with colleagues like Inacio, Bety, Lidia Li, and the rector, Fr. Isaias A. Caldas, SJ, helped us navigate through the challenges, including a period of transition after Inacio’s departure. With guidance from Fr. Plinio Martins, SJ as Vice Rector of the Institute’s Office of Mission and Identity and Dr. Gumba, a volunteer from the Philippines, we developed a comprehensive Finance Manual. Through this experience, I honed my communication skills and learned the value of patience, generosity, and collaboration.

Teaching has proved to be one of the most meaningful aspects of my regency so far. Despite initial self-doubt, my previous experience teaching English and Catholicism in India helped me prepare thoroughly. I engaged students in critical thinking and writing, and their enthusiasm and questions inspired me. Many shared personal challenges, revealing a deep hunger for education and personal development. I aimed to nurture their holistic growth, encouraging them to become agents of change in society.

Timor-Leste’s history of conflict has left lasting scars on its people, affecting family harmony and well-being. Recognizing this, ISJB’s formation team established a program to support students through spiritual direction and individual colloquiums. My involvement in this work underscored the importance of listening and providing guidance. Many students faced family-related difficulties, and I offered a compassionate ear, often moved by their stories. Through these encounters, my faith deepened, reinforcing my Jesuit vocation and the understanding that everyone carries their own cross.

Reflecting on my time at ISJB so far, I’ve learned that time is precious and that I am called to embrace every moment with love, listen with empathy, and find meaning in my work. Through these experiences, I have seen God’s presence in the struggles of others, enriching my own journey of faith.
