From Seeds of Hope to Fruits of Change

A Story of Transformation – Cornelio de Deus, Railaco

Cornelio de Deus (36), from Fatukero, Railaco, currently serves as an officer with the Food Security (FS) Program at Jesuit Social Services (JSS). A dedicated husband to Maria Bernadete (28), and father of two children—Silvio and Zerlia—Cornelio and his family began their journey in 2019. Although he was without formal employment at that time, his strong will to support his family drove him to contribute to his community in meaningful ways.

Cornelio ’s involvement with agriculture began in 2018 with a local group known as TILOFE (Timor-Leste Organic Fertilizer), which focused on producing organic fertilizer. Between 2021 and 2022, he dedicated himself to volunteer work in seed planting and vegetable production. Encouraged by training sessions from both international and local NGOs, he found the motivation and skills to improve his family’s life through sustainable practices.

In 2023, Cornelio joined JSS. Reflecting on his journey, he shares: “I am very happy to work with the team, not only because it helps improve my family’s life, but also because I learn how to strengthen my faith in God.” Cornelio has experienced a deep transformation through his work. He speaks about the joy of sharing this transformation with his family and community, saying that his happiness and learning now ripple outward, inspiring others.

Through his role, he actively accompanies households and families—sharing his knowledge in organic fertilizer production and encouraging a shift away from chemical fertilizers toward more sustainable, natural methods. “Although I have just started working with them, the feedback has been very positive. They’ve been able to apply the methods, see the benefits, and share their experiences with others.”

Cornelio participates regularly in spiritual reflection through monthly retreats in Railaco Parish and with JSS. These moments of prayer and discernment are crucial, reminding him and his colleagues to reflect on their work as a mission aligned with God’s will: “Do we always reflect on our work as bringing God’s presence?”. He notes that all their activities aim to speak and work for God, bringing faith into the heart of each community they serve. “We always follow God’s grace and remain patient with every result—because we know that God is our providence.”

One of the standout programs Cornelio leads is sugarcane planting, where his role includes managing processes and mentoring farmers. Communities around Railaco; like Matata (3 villages), Seloi Kraik (2 villages), and Hoholau have already benefited. He also supports school gardens at EBF Matata, the NOSSEF dormitory, and EBC Railaco.

Cornelio’s message to all partners is clear: “Continue to promote your knowledge to those in need. Agriculture is the key to life and the key to a healthy family—through the food we grow ourselves.” He emphasizes the importance of transitioning to organic fertilizers, not only to improve crop yield but also to preserve the land for future generations. “To take care of our soil, we must stop using chemicals and start using organic matter. Only then can we ensure fertile land for our children.”

Cornelio is proud of the transformation taking place in Railaco and beyond, and he sees hope in every community he visits. “JSS has helped many become more independent and sustainable. The change in mindset—from chemical dependence to natural methods—is one of the greatest impacts I’ve witnessed.”

He concludes with a heartfelt wish: “Let us continue promoting the Food Security Program, not only to become self-sufficient but to lift others up, share what we know, and help change lives for the better.” [ Iriana Soares \\ ETR Communications Officer]
