ISJB: A Home That Transforms Lives

Instituto São João de Brito (ISJB) is not only a Jesuit institution in Timor-Leste — it has become a home, a favorite place, and a space that transforms lives. The inspiring story of Rute Mafalda Duarte, a second-year student majoring in English Language Education, reflects the true spirit of ISJB.

At first, Rute believed that studying meant simply graduating and becoming a teacher one day. However, after nearly four years at ISJB, she discovered something far more meaningful.

“ISJB is a place that forms not only intelligent minds but also hearts that are ready to serve,” she shared.

Through her journey, Rute realized that Jesuit education goes beyond academics.

“What I like most about studying in a Jesuit institution is how it helps me grow not only in knowledge but also in humanity and faith,” she said.

Reflecting on her experience, Rute expressed her deep gratitude to those who have supported her along the way.

“I thank all the teachers and Jesuits who guide us with love, care, and patience. ISJB has truly become my second home — a place where I found God, friendship, and inspiration for life.”

For Rute, every moment at ISJB is an opportunity to learn and become a better version of herself. The spiritual formation and strong sense of community have taught her to “find God in all things.”

The Ignatian values of Magis and Cura Personalis have deeply inspired her to serve others with generosity and dedication.

“These values inspire me to do my best and to be more generous in serving others. I’ve learned that education is not just about learning but about becoming a better person for others,” she reflected.

As Rute only in forth semester she carries with her a clear sense of purpose.

“I want to see myself as a mature and responsible person who lives with purpose and faith. Jesuit education reminds us to use our talents for the good of all, not just for ourselves,” she affirmed.

She hopes that others will see her growth at ISJB not only in academics but also in her character — as a person who grows in love, discipline, service, and care for others.

After graduation, Rute plans to dedicate herself to improving education in rural areas of Timor-Leste.

“I want to use what I’ve learned to improve education in my community, especially in rural areas where students still lack many opportunities,” she stated.

She believes that small acts can lead to big change. “Real change begins with small steps. If we all work together, we can make education in Timor-Leste stronger and better for everyone.”

Rute’s dream is to become a teacher who builds peace, unity, and progress through education.

“Education is not only about achieving success but about helping others succeed too,” she emphasized.

Looking ahead, she envisions herself working in education or youth development, where she can share her knowledge and continue deepening her faith.

“Life after graduation won’t be easy, but the spiritual formation I’ve received at ISJB gives me the strength to face challenges with hope and courage.”

Her hope for education in Timor-Leste is that every child — especially in rural areas — will have equal access to quality teachers, proper classrooms, and learning materials.

“Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Investing in rural schools can truly transform lives,” she affirmed.

Rute’s story is a testament to the Jesuit values of care, service, and love — principles that continue to inspire her to help build a more just and educated Timor-Leste for future generations.
