“I am really impressed by how educated and travelled the people I work with. Also, the standard of English is very impressive. Everyone is very genuine and friendly and are very studied in the Catholic Religion,” shared Gavin, a dedicated volunteer contributing his expertise to the Instituto São João de Brito (ISJB) in Timor-Leste.
At 48 years old, Gavin brings a wealth of experience, having worked in the corporate finance sector for 25 years across Australia and Ireland. Despite his successful career, Gavin felt compelled to embark on a new journey, driven by a desire to give back to communities in need and immerse himself in a different culture. “I wanted to provide my expertise to an institution in need without monetary gain and assist in the development of Timor-Leste whilst experiencing a new culture and a less material environment,” Gavin explained.
In his role within the finance team at ISJB, Gavin is committed to supporting the staff in achieving their financial goals, contributing to the institution’s mission of empowering education in Timor-Leste. His decision to volunteer for up to two years underscores his dedication to making a meaningful impact and fostering positive change.
