NEWS FROM BRAZIL

November, 2024 proved to be a dynamic and demanding month for the students at FAJE, as it marked the much-anticipated exam period. This time of year is known for testing not just academic knowledge but also the perseverance and dedication of each student. The atmosphere on campus was charged with intense focus and determination, as students engaged in long study sessions, group discussions, and moments of individual reflection to prepare for the rigorous assessments.

The exams proceeded smoothly, and students received results that were a direct reflection of their efforts. These marks are more than just numbers—they are indicators of the knowledge gained, the commitment demonstrated, and the challenges overcome. For those who achieved their desired results, it was a celebration of hard work paying off. For those who fell short of their expectations, it was a reminder of the need to push further and strive for improvement. In both cases, the experience serves as a valuable lesson in resilience and growth, emphasizing that learning is a continuous journey.

This month was also significant for another reason: the heartfelt farewell to Professor Dr Ir Zuleica Aparecida Silvano FSP, a cherished member of the FAJE faculty for two decades. Her departure marked the end of an era, leaving a profound impact on students, colleagues, and the institution as a whole. Known for her passionate teaching of Escritos Paulinos and the Gospel of Mark, Professor Zuleica’s classes were not just lectures but transformative experiences that challenged students to think deeply and engage critically with theological texts.

Her dedication extended far beyond the classroom—she was not only a teacher but also a mentor, guide, and an enduring source of inspiration for countless students over the years. Her impact on the academic, spiritual, and personal growth of her students has left an indelible mark, shaping lives in profound ways. The farewell ceremony was a testament to her remarkable contributions, filled with heartfelt gratitude, cherished memories, and emotional tributes from those whose lives she has touched. Faculty, staff, and students came together to honor her significant role in enriching the academic and spiritual life of FAJE, recognizing her unwavering commitment to excellence, compassion, and transformative education.

On this special occasion, I had the privilege of representing the students from Timor-Leste who have been profoundly influenced by her guidance. Many of these students, under her mentorship, have gone on to embrace their vocations as priests and are now serving their communities in Timor-Leste. In recognition of her selfless dedication and tireless efforts, I presented Professor Dr Ir Zuleica Aparecida Silvano FSP with a Tais, a traditional handwoven fabric from Timor-Leste, as a heartfelt token of gratitude. This gift symbolizes our deep respect, appreciation, and the enduring impact she has had on our lives.

Though her departure marks the end of a chapter, her legacy will undoubtedly resonate through the generations of students she has inspired. Her excellence as an educator, her compassion as a mentor, and her unwavering commitment to nurturing others will continue to light the way for all who follow in her footsteps. We extend our heartfelt thanks and best wishes to Professor Zuleica as she embarks on the next chapter of her journey, confident that her influence will remain a guiding force for many years to come.

God bless, Nelson Marques SJ
