Seeing the Work as Compassion: A Volunteer’s Reflection with Jesuit Social Service Timor-Leste (JSS)

Being a volunteer in one of the programs of Jesuit Social Service Timor-Leste (JSS) as a Jesuit candidate has been a profound opportunity to reflect the love of God and live out Christ’s mission of freedom, justice and love. Serving through this ministry has filled me with deep gratitude and joy, especially as I’ve worked directly with local communities through the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Program.

Through this mission, I have gained valuable experience and spiritual growth. For me, this responsibility feels like an outstretched hand reaching those in need—a tangible expression of Christ’s presence in the world. I see our service as an act of charity rooted in love and virtue, all for the greater glory of God. True compassion, I’ve learned, is not only about helping others but also about giving life and hope through our actions.

Compassion in Action

Building water sources and sanitation facilities for local communities is not just about physical construction—it’s about upholding human dignity and ensuring that everyone has access to a healthy and decent life. I am thankful for the hope that God gives us through this work, a hope that reflects the very essence of divine dignity.

Compassion, for me, also means offering my time, energy, and joy alongside families and friends who benefit from these programs. My responsibilities include organizing materials, caring for construction needs, and motivating communities to work together. We strive to ensure that the water tanks and sanitation facilities we build are well maintained so that they may serve families for many years to come.

I see this mission not only as work, but as a path of transformation—helping our people grow in hope and faith.

Since joining JSS, I have found this mission deeply inspiring. The experience has drawn me closer to God and helped me understand that this is the mission Christ has entrusted to me: to be His hands for those who cannot be reached. Working alongside my teammates, Maun José and Satria, has been a blessing—their partnership and support strengthen our shared purpose.

Together, we have reached communities across Hatu-Udo (Ainaro), Fatuglana (Liquiça), Matata (Ermera), Railako-Leten (Ermera), Hatolia (Ermera), and Leogore (Covalima)—building toilets and sanitation facilities for dozens of families.

What touches me most is the way these families express their gratitude—not just to us, but to God, who works through others to bless them. Their words remind me that our efforts are made possible by JSS donors and friends, whose ongoing support brings life and hope to communities across Timor-Leste.
