Serving the School Community

The Ignatian values are more than just ideas at NOSSEF (Nossa Senhora de Fatima) secondary school located in Railaco,—they are a way of life. They awaken students’ courage, shape their motivation, and inspire them to learn something new every day.

Two Grade 11 students, Edith Maia and Ivonio dos Santos, share how their journey at NOSSEF, surrounded by friends, teachers and, Ignatian Spirituality, has transformed the way they see life.

“Care for others is real here”

For Edith, NOSSEF is a place where care for others is lived, not just taught.

“The context of care for others in NOSSEF is real—it’s like a naturally created vibe to be men and women for and with others. It has helped me understand other people’s situations.”

Edith also appreciates how the school offers students a safe space to share their personal struggles. Through Spiritual Conversation with Sister Olga. SPC, students can find consolation and understanding.

Serving the School Community

One activity Edith and Ivonio both enjoy is “Cleaning Time,” when each grade takes responsibility for caring for the school environment.

“We think it is very important to take care of NOSSEF’s environment because this is our second home. We spend most of our time here—simply cleaning our classroom, gardening and, putting trash in its place.”

For Ivonio, being part of Corre-NOSSEF (the student council) since January has shaped his sense of responsibility and environmental awareness.

Taking Lessons Beyond the Classroom

The values Ivonio learns at NOSSEF go beyond school walls. In his community, he encourages neighbors and family members to care for their shared environment.

“I encourage my neighbors and family to separate waste based on materials and inform them about the dangers of cutting down big trees.”

Growing with NOSSEF

Through the formation programs and Ignatian values, NOSSEF has helped students like Edith and Ivonio grow not just in academics, but in leadership, compassion and care for others.

The calm, supportive, and family-like environment at NOSSEF has made them proud to call it their second home—and ready to be young leaders for the future.
