Umbelina’s Journey with NOSSEF

From Nun to Teacher – A Vocation of Service

For Umbelina, both being a nun and being a teacher are vocations close to her heart. In 2009, she professed her first vows with the Franciscan Jesus Mary Congregation (FCJM), but her family did not support her dreams to be a nun. A year later, she began her academic journey at the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL), studying Education. After graduating in 2015, she applied to teach at NOSSEF—thinking it would only be temporary. But God had other plans, full of surprises and grace.

“I thought being a teacher was not really my passion—I was loved my vocation as a nun. But due to personal reasons, my family didn’t support that dream, so I left, even after I professed my first vows,” Umbelina recalls.

A Journey of Growth and Faith

Her years at NOSSEF have brought opportunities that have shaped not only her professional career but also her spiritual life. Overseas academic and spiritual formation programs have deepened her faith and skills. The care and support from the school’s director and fellow teachers have made her love teaching more and more each day.

“It’s been 10 years at NOSSEF. I’ve met so many different student personalities, and Ignatian Spirituality has been at the center of how we understand each other—not only in academics but also in becoming men and women for others,” she says.

For Umbelina, NOSSEF feels like home—a place of unity, family spirit, and a strong support network. The discipline of the students and the dedication of the teachers have only strengthened her love for her profession.

Teaching Across Disciplines

When she began in 2017, Umbelina taught Biology. A year later, due to a teacher shortage, she also took on Geology classes. From 2018 to 2023, she taught Tetum language alongside Biology, and today she continues to teach Biology to Grades 10–12 across nine classes.

An alumna of NOSSEF and a native of Railaco, Umbelina sees teaching as both a mission and a path for personal growth. She draws inspiration from the Ignatian values known as the 4C’s—Competence, Conscience, Compassion, and Commitment.

“The 4C’s are at the heart of NOSSEF’s environment. I am committed and responsible in my career, and I remain conscious of the needs of my fellow teachers and students,” she explains.

A Vocation Renewed

For Umbelina, teaching is more than a job—it is a vocation that continues to inspire her to study, learn, and share knowledge. Her journey is a testament to how God’s plans can transform our paths, leading us to where we are meant to serve.

Umbelina’s story represents the dedication of teachers at NOSSEF. Your generosity and support can make a significant impact for teachers like her, helping to educate and transform the young generation in this country.
