Volunteerism that leads to self-discovery and cultural exchange- Killian

Meet Killian, a passionate volunteer from France, who has spent over a year in Timor-Leste. With a background in engineering, he pursued studies for five years before deciding to enter the seminary almost five years ago. Seeking further experiences, he ventured into volunteering in a distant country, away from his family and comfort zone. After completing his formation and preparation, he was sent to Timor-Leste last year by his association, MEP (Mission Exchange Paris)

In Timor-Leste, the Jesuits assigned him to work at the senior high school in Railaco (NOSSEF). Initially teaching English, he later took on the role of a multimedia and technology teacher in response to the school’s needs. Despite it being his first teaching experience, Killian learned a great deal and found joy in his work. The environment fostered mutual learning—he taught the students, while they, in turn, taught him the Timorese language and culture. Through his presence, he hopes to share his knowledge, time, and culture.

One significant lesson Killian learned from the Timorese people is the value of living a simple yet fulfilling life, prioritizing meaningful connections with loved ones over superficial pursuits.

During his mission, Killian enjoys solo travel, which provides valuable opportunities for self-discovery and discernment for future journeys. As a first-time volunteer, he has explored various parts of the country, savored local cuisine, developed a fondness for Timorese coffee, and cultivated meaningful relationships within the workplace and among Jesuit mission friends.

As his time in Timor-Leste draws to a close, Killian aims to make his last month memorable and expresses gratitude to the Jesuits in Timor-Leste for their warm welcome to all volunteers. He hopes NOSSEF will continue to uphold and enhance the quality of education.
