Bringing the Spirit of MAGIS to Railaco Parish

Over the past ten years, MAG+S Timor-Leste has quietly grown into a space where young people are invited to pause, reflect and discover a deeper meaning in their lives. What began as a simple initiative has slowly become a journey of accompaniment, walking with youth through moments of uncertainty, growth and hope.

The journey has had its challenges. In the early days, MAG+S Timor-Leste often worked with very limited resources, finding ways to reach young people and offer meaningful experiences to them. There were times when progress felt slow, and moments when the impact was not immediately visible. Yet, what remained was a quiet commitment to continue the journey, guided by the spirit of MAGIS.

Over time, that commitment began to take root. Formation became more grounded; communities grew stronger and more young people found a space where they could grow. The fruits of this journey were seen not in big achievements, but in small, meaningful changes, young people becoming more aware of themselves, more attentive to others and more open to serving their communities.

As part of MAG+S Timor-Leste’s 10th anniversary celebrations, it was decided to open a new path in this journey at the Parish of Railaco. On March 22, 2026, MAG+S Timor-Leste held its first formation gathering with the youth of the Parish. It was a simple beginning, yet a significant one.

Participants were introduced to the context of MAG+S, its vision, mission and its roots in Ignatian Spirituality. For many of these young people, this was their first encounter with MAG+S not simply as an event or activity but as a way of living with purpose, reflection and service.

Throughout the day, participants were invited to take part in simple spiritual exercises, including times of silence, guided reflection and personal prayer. In these quiet spaces, they were encouraged to look into their own lives, to notice what they were feeling, and to reflect on what gave them life and where they might be called to grow. These moments allowed each person to encounter themselves more honestly, and hopefully to also encounter God in a gentle and personal way.

One of the most important moments of the day occurred when participants were introduced to their BEST or “Belun Espiritual” (‘spiritual friend’), not as their instructors but as companions. In a quiet and simple way, this encounter carried a reassuring message, that throughout the Magis formation journey, no one walks alone.

As the day unfolded, a gentle shift could be felt. Those who arrived with hesitation slowly became more at ease. Conversations began to take place more openly. There was laughter, but also moments of silence that felt full rather than empty. In sharing and reflection, something deeper began to grow, a sense of trust and a space where each person felt seen and heard.

Many participants left carrying something new within them. For some, it was a renewed sense of hope. For others, a deeper awareness of their own journey. And for many, it was ‘simply’ the experience of being accompanied—something apparently small yet deeply meaningful.

In the context of the past ten years, this first formation experience in Railaco Parish may seem like a simple step. Yet it reflects the heart of MAG+S Timor-Leste’s mission: Into the Deep.

As MAG+S Timor-Leste celebrates its 10th anniversary, this experience is a gentle reminder that meaningful change often begins in simple encounters, honest conversation and the willingness to walk together.

In this journey, the spirit of MAGIS continues, inviting each person to continuously go a little deeper and become more for others.
