Spotlight on Manuel Mendonça Araujo: A Journey of Vocation at Instituto São João de Brito (ISJB)

Since joining the Instituto São João de Brito (ISJB) in January 2018, Manuel Mendonça Araujo has made significant contributions as a full-time lecturer in the English department. Guided by the principles of Jesuit and Inclusive Education, Manuel is dedicated to helping others, spreading faith, and striving to make a positive impact in the lives of his students. As he reflects on his role, he shares, “For me, teaching at ISJB is not just a career; it is a true vocation.”

Navigating the curriculum is one of ISJB’s key challenges. “The existing guidebook provides a framework, but it often lacks the depth needed to fully support students, especially those at varying levels of study,” Manuel explains.  He sees these challenges as chances for growth, saying, “These obstacles inspire me to think critically and creatively, allowing me to design lessons that truly resonate with my students.” Every challenge he encounters is an opportunity for personal and professional growth.

Manuel discovered the Inaciana retreat to be very powerful since it developed a strong sense of community among teachers. “This retreat strengthened the bonds of care and support among the teachers. “It created an environment where everyone looks out for one another,” he says. Whether visiting a sick colleague or substituting in for a teacher who is unable to be present, the atmosphere of teamwork at ISJB is evident. “Flexibility and mutual support are at the heart of what we do,” he said.

Manuel is similarly committed to developing genuine relationships with his students. “I make it a priority to check in on their well-being,” he says, recognizing the obstacles people encounter, which include financial troubles to family issues. “These personal connections not only support students academically but also nurture a caring and responsive learning environment,” he reflects.

Looking ahead, Manuel expects to see ISJB expand into a university. “I envision expanding our academic offerings, including the establishment of a Faculty of Health Medicine,” he says, drawing on the resources of the Jesuit clinic. This desire reflects a broader dedication to academic success and community involvement, which reinforces ISJB’s objective of providing great education to everyone.

At ISJB, we share a mission to educate, support, and encourage one another. As Manuel states it simply: “Through collaboration and a shared dedication to Jesuit values, we continue to make a meaningful impact in our students’ lives and the community at large.”
