The Essence of Pursue Education in Instituto São João de Brito (ISJB)

In this edition of our newsletter, we’re excited to feature an inspiring interview with Basilio Soares Maia, a dedicated student at ISJB. Founded by the Jesuits, ISJB is committed to training exceptional educators equipped with deep knowledge, professional ethics and, a holistic approach to teaching.

Basilio chose ISJB for its comprehensive training methods, which emphasize not only academic excellence but also personal growth. He recalls a recommendation from a nun that highlighted ISJB’s unique approach to education, which includes retreats, examinations of conscience and reflection sessions. “ISJB provides holistic formations,” Basilio says. “It’s not just about academics; it’s about shaping our character and values.”

Through discernment and self-reflection, Basilio has developed a clearer sense of direction in his life. He emphasizes the importance of social responsibility, stating, “As future teachers, we must not only help our students but also the broader community, especially those in need.”

Basilio shares his experience leading various class activities, including hands-on DIY projects that foster collaboration and creativity. “Earning the trust of my peers and representing ISJB in extracurricular activities have been incredibly rewarding,” he notes.

Despite initial challenges, such as not having access to a personal laptop for the first couple of years, Basilio found strength in the supportive ISJB community. “Most students come from different municipalities, which made adapting a bit difficult at first. However, over time, we have grown to understand and support each other like a family.”

Currently, Basilio is honored to represent ISJB in conversations with Provincial Father General Superior, Arturo Sosa when he visited Timor-Leste in Dili. “The other experience has boosted my confidence in leadership,” he shares, referring to his participation in a fundraising program at Timor-Plaza, where he played a significant role along with his teacher.

As he approaches graduation, Basilio reflects on his bittersweet feelings about leaving ISJB. “While I am sad to say goodbye, I also feel a sense of accomplishment and happiness for the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Basilio credits his teachers as true transformers in his life. “They strive to be fair and supportive, ensuring that every student has equal opportunities,” he explains. “Their commitment to our growth helps us become better individuals, not just academically but in all aspects of life.”

At ISJB, the ethos of helping one another is deeply ingrained. “We struggle together and learn to understand each other’s lives, which enriches our educational journey,” Basilio concludes.
